Why you can’t get a decent domain name anymore

by Matt

It's called "domaining", "domain Kiting", or "domain tasting". It is the art of buying domain names and parking them with adsense. I'm sure you know exactly what I'm talking about…so many times, I search for a domain name and see it taken, then I go to the website and find a single page parked with tons of ads on it. Frustrating, isn't it. need an example, look at domaining.com, it's a perfect example.

Domain tasting lets you try a domain name for about 5 days without having to buy it. Spammers have written automatic scripts to register as many domain names as possible. They immediately park ads on the site, and try to get some clicks. If the site does not produce they drop the name, or they drop it and re-register it immediatly…known as "domain kiting". So they can basically keep millions of domain names without paying for them. Of course the process is immediate so there is no chance for you to try to get a one of these domain names when they expire.

The spammers throw away the domain name if they do not generate any money, so how much does the domain need to generate in order to be kept? try $6 a year…not a day, not a month, $6 a year. Of course multiply that my thousands of websites and you are making some serious money.

With up to six million names tied up at any given time through a practice known as domain-name tasting, individuals and businesses are having even greater difficulty finding good names, particularly in the already-crowded dot-com space.

The practice has spiked, with an average tasting of 1.2 million names each day in December, compared with 7,200 two years earlier, according to data from Name Intelligence, which analyzes domain name patterns. Legitimate registrations made up 2 percent of the registrations at the end of 2006, down from about half in 2004.

How do you get an expired domain…old story, but a good read: expired domain auctions

Bottom line is this, if it can earn 2 cents a day it can provide 6% ROI, at 3 cents a day that's a whopping 60% ROI and that's the bottom of the barrel, look and you can hand register much better than that daily.

so next time you try to get a domain name and find them all taken, just know you are not alone.

    Better SEO for your Website using Plugins and Tags -Part 2

    by Matt

    Ok, so we have our tags set up from part 1 for single post pages. Now we need to make our title even more keyword friendly and use some of the tags we are generating to use on our main page.
    View Part one

    Make sure you have activated SEO Title Tags. Look in the options section of your blog admin and you will see SEO Title Tags. You should add a more specific title for your main blog...in this section: "For home page, specify title tag" enter a sentence that describes your blog. For example, here is my new title: "Real Estate Blog Consulting: Real World Tips For Marketing Blogs and Introductions to Technology". This will replace your current blog title, which is created from the options->General section of your blog. We have "Realivent Real Estate Technology Blog" in that section. This will still be used on all single pages and posts. The SEO Title Tag will also rearrange the title for all single posts and pages to display the post title, before the blog title. Before we activated the SEO Title Tag, our title for this post looked like this: Realivent Real Estate Technology Blog >> Better SEO for your Website using Plugins and Tags -Part 2 now it looks like this: Better SEO for your Website using Plugins and Tags -Part 2 >> Realivent Real Estate Technology Blog. It subtle, but effective.

    before your blog changes the title, you have to add a little bit of php code to your header.php file.

    In your current theme folder, open the header.php file and find the title tags.
    Before:

    HTML:
    1. <title><?php bloginfo('name'); ?><?php wp_title(); ?></title>

    After:

    HTML:
    1. <title><?php if (function_exists('seo_title_tag')) { seo_title_tag(); } else { bloginfo('name'); wp_title();} ?></title>

    Basically the above code says, if the SEO Title tag is activated it will display the new formatted title, if SEO Title Tag is not activated, Wordpress will display the original title. So even if you remove the plugin, you title will still display your blog information. That's it for SEO Title Tags, our title is now golden. Are you on the first page of Google yet?

    Let's go back to Tag Warrior again, we still have to add meta keywords to the main blog page.

    Remember that Tag Warrior already makes meta keywords for single page posts, so we do not have to do anything. But for the main page, we need to add tags. I am going to us the UTW_ShowWeightedTagSet function to get the most popular tags for my blog and put them in the meta keywords. So my meta keywords will always match my content.

    enter this code into the header.php file.

    HTML:
    1. <meta name="keywords" content="<?php echo (!is_single())? UTW_ShowWeightedTagSet('tagsettextonly','',40) : '' ; ?>" />

    What the above code says: if the page is not a single post, (! = not true, or false) fill the content of our meta keywords with the most popular tags. The number 40, means I only want to show the top 40 tags, I would leave it at 0 to show all. But sometimes to many keywords is bad, Google will think you are a keyword spammer. For more information about the UTW functions, you can read about them from the options page for the plugin. There are links to formats and functions built by the author.

    That should do it for the start of our SEO optimization. We now have a keyword friendly title, and heavy keywords in our metatags based on our most popular tags. Even if this has no effect, it only took us about 30 minutes and we don't every have to do it again...Next I'm going to try to remove all my html errors, and validate my html. I think I had over 400 last time I verified my html...I'm sure it's just going to be easy, I'll let you know how it goes.

    Real World SEO Examples - How important is your website title?

    by Matt

    First off, I hate SEO, (search engine optimization)...I hate it because, for one, nobody really knows what the search engine bases their searches on, and secondly, there are sooooo many companies out there that will charge you thousands of dollars for good search placement. With that being said, I am now going to become a SEO Guru and then charge tell you guys what I do and if it works. We are going to start with a simple title modification using tags, and some Wordpress plugins

    Another reason why I have never focus on SEO, is because things are different in San Francisco (my location) compared to  small towns around the country. Good luck getting good search placement for "Real Estate San Francisco".

    A little side note, Kevin Boer of 3 Oceans blog comes up on page 2 from the above search, and is the first real estate agent website you come across, as compared to brokerages and online real estate searches. That is a pretty good job.

    Now search for "Real Estate Fallbrook" (Fallbrook, CA is my hometown) not the smallest town in America, but pretty small. You get Allen Shall as the second result on the first page, and 5 real estate agent websites on the first 3 pages. Which, IMO is still not a lot when you think about all the agents in that area.

    so let's think about it...should you use SEO? On one hand, if you do it right, you can get top placement, but is this even possible? what are the chances of you getting top placement in google. I'm pretty sure there are thousands of real estate websites that have been designed around good SEO, and they are not top on Google. what will make your website different?

    on the other hand, should you forget about SEO and focus on pro-active activities to promote your websites. Over the last couple years I have been more pro-active, and I've had good results, but none of my sites are high on Google. Maybe if I focus on SEO, I would have high ranking sites and I could just relax now...I doubt it, but maybe.

    Whether SEO works or not can be argued forever, but we all know Google loves keywords, so let's make sure our Wordpress blogs are keyword heavy.

    Go get this tool: web developer extension for firefox
    This is a firefox extension that can display many cool things about webpages as you see them in firefox. It does not work in IE, so you need Firefox.

    once you install the extension, you will see it as one of your toolbars. This toolbar is really for developers to see how their webpages act in different sized browsers, and how the form information is passed, etc...but we are going to use it to get our metatag information.

    Metatags are used by search engine robots to get information about your site. This is another argument amongst SEO experts whether it is used anymore or not.

    My opinion; I think they are used, but in a combination with the content of your webpages. So if your meta description and keywords are different from the actual content in your webpage...they don't work. Bottom line, don't rely on meta keywords, make sure your main content is keyword rich also, with the same keywords as your metatags.

    Back to metatags...once you have installed the WDE, go to your website and click on the information button.webdeveloper extension information for metatags

    At the bottom of the menu, you will see meta information. When you click on that you will be able to see all the meta information. In my case, there was none. No keywords, no description, just generator, which is useless.

    there are 2 Wordpress plugins you will need to make some good keywords.

    SEO Title plugin - this rearranges your blog title to emphasize your keywords (tags)
    Ultimate Tag Warrior - This plugin creates tags and allows you to place then is strategic places on your blog

    in the options section of you admin, you will now notice a page for tags. There is a lot of configuration for your tags, we just want to focus on Meta for now...so make sure you check Meta Keywords "When enabled, meta keywords will be included in the header of tag pages, and single post pages. These keywords are sometimes used by search engines.Include meta keywords"

    you do not have an tags yet though...another cool thing tag warrior (UTW) will do is create tags from your categories, but you will have to edit each post you have and just click save, to add the categories as tags. Make sure you have "Automatically add categories as tags" checked in the Tag admin section.

    Now, when you look at individual posts you will see that UTW has added meta keywords. Your main blog page will still not have them, we will add them later because this post is getting way too long, and it will require little php examples.

    I'm going to stop here...because I have to run...Later tonight I will continue with this topic and go over the SEO Title Tag plugin and give some code to update your title and meta info on your main page.

    View Part 2 - making your tags work for you.
